We want the truth

Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy is calling for a truth and reconciliation commission to investigate the Bush-Cheney administration's abuses of power. Although President Obama has said he prefers to "look forward," I believe we need to take a hard look back at what the previous administration has done to understand how and why it happened, and to ensure that it never happens again. We can't ignore the past eight years. We need to learn from them. Please consider supporting Senator Leahy's efforts to learn the truth.

Yes We Can

Watching yesterday's inauguration felt like I dream, and I can't quite believe that we did it. For the past eight, dark years, I've kept this excerpt from Seamus Heaney's The Cure at Troy posted above my desk, and now my hopes have finally become reality.
History says, Don’t hope
on this side of the grave.
But then, once in a lifetime
the longed for tidal wave
of justice can rise up,
and hope and history rhyme.

So hope for a great sea-change
on the far side of revenge.
Believe that a further shore
is reachable from here.
Believe in miracles
and cures and healing wells.

Another kind of hearing

In only five days, and despite a major media blackout, over 100,000 people have signed on in support of Florida Representative Wexler's call for hearings into the impeachment of Vice President Cheney. It's gratifying to see Democrats finally taking a stand against the abuses of the Bush Administration. Please consider adding your voice to this effort.

They can hear us now

Thanks to Chris Dodd and thousands of people making phone calls and sending e-mails to their Senators, urging them to defend the U.S. Constitution, Senator Harry Reid decided to pull legislation that would have granted immunity to the telecommunications companies that helped the National Security Agency to conduct its illegal domestic surveillance program. Unfortunately, the fight is not over, as the bill will resurface in 2008, so keep the pressure on your Congressional representatives to hold the phone companies responsible for breaking the law.
